A contactless payment is made by tapping or holding a card, phone or wearable near a reader, without inserting or swiping it.
Explained
Contactless payments mostly use NFC or RFID technology. The card or device exchanges encrypted data with the POS terminal within a few centimetres, and the transaction is authorised in a second or two.
Advantages include speed at checkout, convenience, hygiene and reduced wear on cards. Security is maintained through the short range, dynamic one-time cryptograms for each transaction (as with EMV chip payments), tokenisation in mobile wallets and per-transaction limits above which a PIN or device authentication is required.
QR code payments are sometimes also described as contactless because there is no physical contact with a terminal, although they work by scanning rather than NFC.
In Nepal, banks issue contactless-enabled debit and credit cards and deploy NFC-capable POS terminals, while QR-based scan-and-pay is the more widespread form of contactless payment for small merchants.
In Nepal
NRB allows contactless card transactions of up to Rs 5,000 each. The card-issuing institution sets the number of such transactions and its own risk controls.
