Also called Contactless Technology
NFC is a short-range wireless technology that lets two devices exchange data when held a few centimetres apart, used for tap-and-pay card and mobile payments.
Explained
NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and works over a very short distance, typically about 4 cm. The short range is a security feature: a payment happens only when the card or phone is deliberately brought close to the reader.
In payments, NFC is used in:
- Contactless cards: debit, credit and prepaid cards with an antenna, shown by the contactless symbol, which the customer taps on a POS terminal.
- Mobile and wearable payments: phones and watches that emulate a card, often using tokenisation so the real card number is not shared.
- Transit and access cards.
Contactless payments are fast and reduce handling of cards and cash. For security, card schemes and banks set a limit per transaction above which a PIN is required, and the transaction uses dynamic cryptograms like EMV chip transactions.
In Nepal, banks have issued contactless-enabled cards and installed NFC-capable POS terminals, while QR payments remain more widely used for small merchants because they do not need a terminal.
