Cheque Number and MICRMICR
Also called Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, MICR band, MICR line
MICR is the line of magnetic-ink characters printed at the bottom of a standard cheque that machines read automatically; it carries the cheque serial number, bank (member) code, branch code, account number and transaction code.
Explained
What the MICR line contains The NCHL-ECC Operating Rules describe the MICR line as information printed in a designated space at the bottom of the cheque and read automatically at the scanning stage. Its fields are the cheque serial number, member (bank) code, branch code, account number and transaction code.
Why it matters
- Enables automated sorting, image capture and routing in electronic cheque clearing.
- Each cheque leaf has a unique serial number, which helps detect duplicates, stop payments and frauds.
- Amending any MICR field (serial number, member code, branch code, account number or transaction code) is a reason for the paying bank to reject the cheque.
Standard vs non-standard cheques NRB issued standards and specifications for cheques. "Standard cheques" follow them; older designs that do not are "non-standard cheques". NCHL-ECC supports only MICR-encoded cheques issued by member banks and financial institutions; the ECC rules provide a separate clearing session for non-standard cheques.
Handling tips Do not write, sign, staple or fold on the MICR band, as this can cause rejection.
