Actual and Available Balance
Also called Ledger balance, Book balance, Withdrawable balance
Actual (ledger) balance is the total amount recorded in an account; available balance is the part the customer can actually withdraw or spend right now after holds, uncleared items and required minimum balance are deducted.
Explained
The two figures differ because some money in the account is not free for use.
Why available balance can be lower
- Uncleared funds: a cheque deposited is shown but cannot be used until it is cleared through ECC.
- Holds and liens: amount blocked for a card authorisation, loan security (lien on a fixed deposit), court or regulator freeze, or margin for a guarantee or LC.
- Minimum balance: some accounts require a minimum amount to remain.
- Pending debits: standing instructions or card transactions not yet settled.
Why available balance can be higher An overdraft limit attached to a current account can make available funds larger than the ledger balance.
Formula (simplified) Available balance = Actual balance − holds and liens − uncleared amounts − required minimum balance + unused overdraft limit.
Nepal NRB's Directive 20 says a BFI may not deduct money from an account because its balance falls below the minimum balance, and interest must be paid on the minimum balance amount as well.
