SWIFT CodeBIC
Also called Bank Identifier Code, Business Identifier Code, ISO 9362
A SWIFT code, or Business Identifier Code (BIC), is an 8 or 11 character code under ISO 9362 that uniquely identifies a bank or financial institution in international messages.
Explained
The BIC is defined by the ISO 9362 standard and assigned through SWIFT. Its structure is:
- 4 characters – institution code: identifies the bank (letters).
- 2 characters – country code: ISO country code, for example NP for Nepal.
- 2 characters – location code: identifies the city or location (letters or digits).
- 3 characters – branch code (optional): identifies a specific branch; 'XXX' or omission refers to the head office.
An 8-character code refers to the institution's primary office, while an 11-character code points to a particular branch or department.
A person receiving money from abroad into a Nepali bank account gives the sender the bank's SWIFT code, the account name and the account number. The code ensures the message reaches the correct bank; it does not by itself identify the customer's account. A SWIFT code is different from an IBAN, which identifies an individual account and is not used in Nepal, and from domestic routing identifiers.
Example
In a code such as XXXXNPKA, 'XXXX' is the bank, 'NP' is Nepal and 'KA' is the location (Kathmandu).
