Also called Nepal Stock Exchange Ltd, नेप्से
NEPSE is Nepal's only operating stock exchange, where listed shares, debentures and mutual fund units are traded in the secondary market.
Explained
History:
- NEPSE grew out of the government's Securities Exchange Center, set up in the 1970s with Government of Nepal and NRB backing to deal in government and corporate securities.
- Under the capital market reform programme, the Center was converted into the Nepal Stock Exchange in 1993.
- NEPSE opened its trading floor on 13 January 1994; trading later moved from open outcry to an electronic system and now to online trading (TMS).
Ownership: shareholders include the Government of Nepal, Nepal Rastra Bank, Nepal Industrial Development Corporation and member brokers.
Legal basis: it operates as a stock exchange licensed by SEBON under the Securities Act, 2063. Section 36 requires any stock exchange to obtain a SEBON licence, and the transitional provision required the existing Nepal Stock Exchange to apply for a licence within one year of the Act's commencement.
Functions: listing securities, providing the trading platform through licensed brokers, publishing prices and indices (NEPSE Index, Sensitive Index, sub-indices), and market surveillance. CDS and Clearing Ltd, its subsidiary, handles clearing, settlement and depository services.
