National Payments InterfaceNPI
The National Payments Interface is NCHL's consolidated open API platform that gives participants access to multiple payment systems, such as NCHL-IPS and the Retail Payment Switch, through one interface.
Explained
Before NPI, each payment system had its own integration method, so banks, wallets, billers and fintech firms had to build separate connections. NPI consolidates access through a standard set of application programming interfaces (APIs).
Through NPI, authorised participants can initiate account-to-account transfers, validate account details, collect payments, connect wallets to bank accounts and integrate payments into their own apps and business systems. This supports services such as bank-to-wallet and wallet-to-bank transfers, bill collection and the building of new fintech products on national infrastructure.
The approach reflects the broader trend toward open banking and API-based payments, where secure, standardised interfaces let regulated institutions and their partners create services quickly while the underlying clearing and settlement continue to run through NCHL and NRB's RTGS. Access is controlled through participation agreements, security requirements and NRB's oversight of payment systems.
