अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय विकास संघ
Also called World Bank IDA
IDA is the part of the World Bank that provides concessional (low or zero interest, long maturity) credits and grants to the world's poorest countries.
Explained
Establishment: 1960, created to provide resources to less creditworthy members that could not borrow on IBRD's near-market terms.
Features:
- credits with very low or no interest, long grace periods and long maturities;
- grants for countries at high risk of debt distress;
- funded mainly by contributions from donor governments, replenished every three years, plus IBRD transfers and market borrowing;
- eligibility is based on low income per capita and lack of creditworthiness.
IBRD vs IDA: IBRD lends to middle-income and creditworthy countries on near-commercial terms; IDA lends to the poorest countries on concessional terms. Together they are "the World Bank".
Nepal: as a low-income country, Nepal has borrowed from the World Bank mainly on IDA terms for infrastructure, energy, education, health, agriculture and public finance reforms. IDA loans form a large part of Nepal's external public debt.
