Agency Banking
Also called Agent banking, Business correspondent banking,
Delivery of basic banking services through third-party agents (business correspondents) appointed by a bank, such as local shops or cooperatives, instead of through the bank's own branch.
Explained
In agency banking the bank keeps the account, the risk and the regulatory responsibility, but a trusted local agent handles the customer contact.
How it works
- The bank signs a contract with an agent and gives it a POS device, tablet or app linked to the bank's core system.
- Customers deposit or withdraw cash, transfer money, pay bills, check balances and sometimes open accounts at the agent's outlet.
- Transactions post to the customer's account in real time; the agent's own settlement account with the bank is debited or credited.
- Customers are identified by card, PIN, OTP or fingerprint.
Benefits and risks
- Reaches villages where a full branch is not viable, at much lower cost.
- Risks include agent fraud, cash shortage at the agent, data privacy and weak customer redress, so the bank must monitor agents.
In Nepal agents are used mainly for branchless banking centres and by payment service providers. The service remains the bank's, and NRB's branchless banking guideline asked institutions to state in customer agreements how liability for losses is shared among the customer, the bank and any service provider.
