Traveller's ChequeTC
Also called Travelers cheque
A pre-printed, fixed-denomination cheque sold by a bank or issuer for use while travelling, signed once at purchase and again when encashed, and refundable if lost or stolen.
Explained
How it works
- The traveller buys TCs (for example in US dollars) from a bank or exchange counter and signs each one at purchase in front of the seller.
- To use one, the traveller countersigns it in front of the person encashing it, who compares the two signatures and checks identity.
- The encashing bank pays local currency and later claims the money from the issuer.
Features
- Prepaid: the issuer already holds the money, so there is no risk of insufficient funds.
- Safer than cash: the issuer refunds lost or stolen cheques on presenting the purchase receipt and serial numbers.
- No expiry in most cases.
Decline Debit, credit and prepaid cards and international ATMs have largely replaced TCs worldwide, and several issuers have stopped selling them. Exam questions now ask about them mainly as a banking instrument concept.
In Nepal Buying and encashing foreign currency instruments is governed by NRB's foreign exchange rules, and only institutions licensed by NRB for foreign exchange may deal in them.
