Special Drawing RightsSDR
Special Drawing Rights are an international reserve asset created by the IMF and allocated to member countries, valued on a basket of major currencies.
Explained
The IMF created the SDR in 1969 to supplement member countries' official reserves. SDRs are allocated to members in proportion to their IMF quotas. They are not a currency and cannot be used by private parties; rather, they are a potential claim on the freely usable currencies of IMF members. Countries can exchange SDRs for hard currency with other members through voluntary arrangements.
The SDR's value is based on a basket of five currencies: the US dollar, euro, Chinese renminbi, Japanese yen and British pound. The IMF reviews the basket every five years and sets the weights. The SDR is also the IMF's unit of account, used to denominate quotas, loans and charges.
General allocations, such as the large allocation made in 2021 to help countries cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, boost member countries' reserves. Holdings of SDRs are counted as part of a country's foreign exchange reserves.
Nepal, as an IMF member since 1961, holds SDRs as part of NRB's reserve assets, and its IMF quota and borrowing from the IMF are expressed in SDRs.
