Payment Gateway
पेमेन्ट गेटवे
A payment gateway is a service that securely captures and transmits online payment details from a website or app to banks or payment networks for authorisation.
Explained
A payment gateway is the online equivalent of a POS terminal. When a customer checks out on an e-commerce site, the gateway encrypts the card, wallet or bank account details, sends them to the acquiring bank or payment network, returns the approval or decline to the merchant, and later supports settlement and reconciliation.
Gateways must protect data through encryption, tokenisation, fraud screening and secure authentication such as 3-D Secure or OTP. Merchants usually integrate the gateway into their website or app through APIs or plug-ins.
In Nepal, gateways are offered by licensed PSPs and PSOs and by banks. Examples include wallet checkout options and the connectIPS payment gateway, which lets customers pay merchants directly from their bank accounts. Government agencies, universities, insurers and airlines widely use such gateways for fee and ticket collection. Merchants pay a fee for the service, and refunds and disputes are handled under the gateway's rules and NRB's directives.
