Non-interest Income
Also called Other Operating Income, Fee-based Income
Non-interest income is a bank's income from sources other than interest, such as fees, commissions, foreign exchange gains and service charges.
Explained
Non-interest income diversifies a bank's revenue beyond the interest margin. Common sources in Nepali banks include:
- Commission on letters of credit, bank guarantees and remittances.
- Loan processing fees, service charges and documentation charges.
- Card fees, ATM and digital channel fees.
- Gains on foreign exchange trading and revaluation.
- Dividends and gains on investments.
- Locker rent, bancassurance commission and other miscellaneous income.
Income from off-balance sheet business such as LCs and guarantees does not require funding from deposits, so it improves return on assets with less use of balance sheet capacity, although contingent liabilities still carry credit risk.
A higher share of non-interest income makes earnings less sensitive to interest rate and spread changes. However, NRB regulates many fees charged to customers, and some fees have been capped or removed to protect consumers, which limits this source.
