Nepal Financial Reporting StandardsNFRS
Also called NAS, Nepal Accounting Standards
NFRS are Nepal's accounting standards, based on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), that govern how entities prepare and present financial statements.
Explained
NFRS are issued by the Accounting Standards Board (ASB) Nepal and pronounced by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN). They were developed on the basis of IFRS so that Nepali financial statements become comparable with international practice. Standards carried over from IAS are numbered as NAS (for example NAS 1 Presentation of Financial Statements, NAS 7 Statement of Cash Flows) while those based on IFRS are numbered as NFRS (for example NFRS 9 Financial Instruments).
Key changes NFRS brought for banks include fair value measurement of many investments, recognition of interest using the effective interest rate method, impairment of loans and, under NFRS 9, the expected credit loss (ECL) model instead of purely rule-based provisioning. The statements comprise the statement of financial position, statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity, statement of cash flows and notes.
NRB directed commercial banks to publish NFRS-based financial statements and issues formats and carve-outs, and later guidelines on ECL, for BFIs.
In Nepal
ICAN made NFRS mandatory for Class A institutions from FY 2015/16, and NRB later issued the circular and formats requiring commercial banks to publish NFRS-based statements.
