Earnings per ShareEPS
Formula
EPS = (Net profit after tax − Preference dividend) / Weighted average number of ordinary shares
- Numerator
- Net profit after tax less preference dividend
- Denominator
- Weighted average number of ordinary shares outstanding
Earnings per share is the net profit available to ordinary shareholders divided by the weighted average number of ordinary shares outstanding.
What the value tells you
Higher EPS means more profit per share and supports higher dividends and share prices; compare growth over time rather than the absolute level across banks.
Explained
EPS shows how much profit each ordinary share earned during a period. It is the most quoted figure in bank results and the base for the price earnings ratio.
The numerator is net profit after tax minus preference dividends. The denominator is the weighted average number of ordinary shares, which adjusts for shares issued during the year through right shares, bonus shares or mergers. Basic EPS uses shares actually outstanding; diluted EPS also counts convertible instruments that could become shares.
Nepali listed banks report annualised EPS in quarterly results, so a first-quarter EPS is multiplied to give a yearly equivalent. EPS can fall even when profit rises if the bank issues many new shares, for example bonus shares or shares issued to raise paid-up capital. Investors therefore compare EPS growth with profit growth and look at it together with the dividend payout ratio and book value per share.
Example
Net profit Rs 2.4 arba, no preference shares, weighted shares 2 crore (20 million). EPS = 2,400,000,000 / 20,000,000 = Rs 120.
In Nepal
Listed BFIs in Nepal disclose annualised EPS in quarterly reports; bonus share issues are common and dilute EPS.
