Book Value per ShareBVPS
Also called Net Worth per Share
Formula
BVPS = (Total shareholders' equity − Preference capital) / Number of ordinary shares outstanding
- Numerator
- Shareholders' equity attributable to ordinary shares
- Denominator
- Number of ordinary shares outstanding at the balance sheet date
Book value per share is shareholders' equity on the balance sheet divided by the number of ordinary shares outstanding.
What the value tells you
A rising BVPS shows retained earnings building up; a market price far above BVPS indicates strong market expectations, while a price below BVPS may signal undervaluation or asset quality concerns.
Explained
BVPS shows the accounting value of each share, that is, what each shareholder would theoretically receive if all assets were sold at book value and all liabilities paid. In Nepal it is commonly called net worth per share.
Shareholders' equity includes paid-up capital, share premium, retained earnings, general reserve and other reserves. Preference capital, if any, is excluded when calculating BVPS for ordinary shares. The number of shares is taken at the balance sheet date.
BVPS rises when the bank retains profit and falls when it pays large dividends or makes losses. A bonus share issue does not change total equity but increases the number of shares, so BVPS falls proportionately.
Comparing market price with BVPS gives the price-to-book ratio. For banks, whose assets are mostly financial and marked close to fair value, book value is a more meaningful anchor than for manufacturing firms. Analysts adjust it for any under-provisioned bad loans, because those overstate the true book value.
Example
Shareholders' equity Rs 30 arba and 15 crore shares outstanding. BVPS = 30,00,00,00,000 / 15,00,00,000 = Rs 200.
