Bill Collection
Also called Collection of bills, Bills for collection,
A service in which a bank, acting as agent of its customer, presents bills, cheques or documents to the paying party and collects the proceeds, without paying the customer in advance.
Explained
Types
- Clean collection: only the financial instrument (cheque, bill of exchange, draft) is sent, without commercial documents.
- Documentary collection: commercial documents such as invoice and bill of lading travel with the bill, released to the buyer against payment (D/P) or acceptance (D/A).
- Outward collection: the bank sends a customer's bill to another bank or place for collection.
- Inward collection: the bank receives bills from other banks to collect from its local customers.
Process
- The customer lodges the bill with collection instructions.
- The remitting bank forwards it to the collecting or presenting bank.
- The presenting bank presents it to the drawee for payment or acceptance.
- Proceeds are remitted back and credited to the customer, less charges. If unpaid, the bill is returned, or noted and protested if instructed.
Collection vs purchase In collection the bank only acts as agent and credits the customer after realisation, so it carries no credit risk. In bill purchase or discounting the bank pays first and becomes a creditor.
Accounting Bills under collection are not the bank's assets; NRB's reporting formats show "bills taken for collection" under contra accounts, separately for local and foreign currency.
