Also called एआईआईबी
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is a multilateral development bank, headquartered in Beijing, that finances sustainable infrastructure in Asia and beyond.
Explained
Establishment: AIIB began operations in Beijing in 2016 with 57 founding members. Its stated mission is "Financing Infrastructure for Tomorrow". By 2025 it had more than 110 members (regional and non-regional).
Focus: sustainable infrastructure such as energy, transport, water, urban development and digital connectivity, plus private capital mobilisation. It often co-finances projects with the World Bank and ADB.
Nepal: Nepal is a founding member. The Parliament of Nepal ratified AIIB's Articles of Agreement in late December 2015, making Nepal a founding member; Nepal subscribed to 806 shares worth around US$16.2 million, payable in instalments as a least developed country.
Exam angle: the NRB syllabus asks about the role of the World Bank, ADB, AIIB and IMF in Nepal's economic development. AIIB adds a new source of infrastructure finance alongside traditional lenders.
